Chronometric dating methods in geosciences and archaeology by luminescence - Part 1: Reporting of equivalent doses and dating results; Text in German and English

Title (German)

Chronometrische Datierung mittels Lumineszenz in Geowissenschaften und Archäologie - Teil 1: Berichterstattung von Äquivalentdosen und Altersbestimmung; Text Deutsch und Englisch

Overview

The SAR procedure is particularly effective in OSL-dating, which is one of the leading chronometric dating methods in geosciences and archaeology. The large number of SAR-OSL results leads to a vast body of especially dating results that are difficult to compare without a common format for the reporting on the procedures and protocols employed, including the determination of measurement parameters and details of data analysis. This document specifies requirements for the reporting of equivalent dose determinations and luminescence dating results deduced from such equivalent doses. An emphasis is placed on SAR-OSL as the most commonly employed technique for quartz mineral separates, the document is also used for feldspar samples using invisible light. However, the SAR procedure is not limited to OSL and can be equally applied in thermoluminescence (TL), while the data reporting applies to most luminescence dosimetric method. An example of good practice in reporting of equivalent dose and dating age results is given in Annex A. Good practice in SAR-OSL procedures is described in Annex B, Templates to be used for reporting in Annex C. This document differs from DIN/TS 44808-1:2022-03 as follows: a) the document provides the complete English text in addition to the German text; b) definition 3.2 as well as the notes to 3.8 and 3.9 have been added (with new numbering); c) various minor changes have been made to clarify the description of requirements in accordance with the comments on the international proposal presented in ISO/TC 85 as draft PAS 6291, including the reorganization of subclauses; d) the requirements for the devices to be used have been supplemented by further references, the naming of the relevant standards has been moved from the bibliography to Clause 2; e) the requirements for the protocol for determining the equivalent dose (now Clause A.3) have been extended; f) the reference list is unnumbered as in the text and Digital Document Identifiers (DOI) have been added.
