Overview

This document covers shielded and unshielded free and fixed connectors, round or rectangular, for symmetrical single-pair data transmission with current-carrying capacity. It also covers combined, shielded, or unshielded free and fixed connectors, round or rectangular, for symmetrical single-pair data transmission that have additional contacts for power transmission, whose performance requirements are described in a product detail specification, see Annex A of the IEC 63171-X series of standards (type X connectors), or in a separate document, either an IEC product detail specification, see Annex A, or a manufacturer's specification. This document does not describe any specific contact interface. It specifies the common mechanical, electrical, and transmission properties and environmental requirements, as well as the required test procedures of the IEC 63171 series of standards or other documents that make reference to them. Within their type, shielded and unshielded connectors are interoperable in terms of their transmission performance and can be interchanged, although the shielded version has improved alien crosstalk and coupling attenuation properties. Single pair connectors in this series may be combined into a multi-pole connector unit or combined with other connectors, such as power connectors, also known as combined (data or signal and power) connectors. There are no restrictions on the scope of application of this document. The standard differs from DIN EN IEC 63171 (VDE 0627-171):2022-11 as follows: a) requirements for multipole and combined connectors have been added (that is, connectors including multiple data modules of this series or connectors including a data module and additional signal or power contacts); b) adaption of transmission requirements to ISO/IEC 11801-1; c) update and reorganization of test groups. Through its application, this document increases investment security for manufacturers and users, provides test laboratories and manufacturers with defined specifications for testing, and ensures compatibility across different manufacturers.
