Overview

The purpose of this document is to enable the developer of safety-related systems to appropriately apply AI technologies as part of safety functions by fostering awareness of the properties, functional safety risk factors, available functional safety methods and potential constraints of AI technologies. This document also contains information on the challenges and potential solutions related to the functional safety of AI systems. This document focuses on the aspects of safety functions performed by a safety-related system through the use of AI technology, either within the safety-related system or during the design and development of the safety-related system, and does not provide guidance on the method for using AI technology in order to achieve inherently functionally safe design of a machine or to provide information to end users. This document describes the characteristics, associated risk factors, and available methods and processes related to the use of AI within a safety-related function in order to realize functionality, the use of safety-related control functions without AI to ensure the safety of an AI-controlled facility, and the use of AI systems for the design and development of safety-related functions.
