Overview

The standard of the DIN EN 60811 (VDE 0473-811) series specifies the test methods to be used for testing non-metallic materials of all types of cables. These test methods are intended to be referenced in standards for cable construction and for cable materials. Non-metallic materials are typically used for insulating, sheathing, bedding, filling or taping within cables. These test methods are accepted as basic and fundamental. They have been developed and used over many years principally for the materials in all energy cables. They have also been widely accepted and used for other cables, in particular optical fibre cables, communication and control cables and cables for ships and offshore applications. This Part 508 of DIN EN 60811 (VDE 0473-811) gives the procedure for pressure test at high temperature, which typically applies to thermoplastic compounds used for insulating and sheathing materials. In accordance with its scope of application, there are no restrictions on the use of this document. The standard differs from DIN EN 60811-508 (VDE 0473-811-508):2018-05 as follows: a) new specifications for the characteristics of the heating cabinet, particularly regarding vibration resistance and temperature control; b) in 4.4.1, requirements for outer sheaths that are permanently attached to a metal sheath have been added; c) in 4.4.2.1, requirements for outer sheaths that are permanently attached to a metal sheath and recommendations for the support mandrel have been added; d) the German version has been updated in Annex ZA to align with the current standard text. Typical application examples for the document include pressure tests at high temperature, which are typically applicable to thermoplastic compounds used for insulating jackets and sheaths.
