Overview
The standards in the DIN EN 60811 (VDE 0473-811) series specify the test methods to be used for testing non-metallic materials of all cable and wire types. Standards for the construction and materials of cables and wires refer to these test methods. The non-metallic materials used in cables and wires are typically used for insulating, sheathing, embedding, filling, or bandaging the interior of the cable. The test methods used for this purpose are recognized as elementary and fundamental. They have been developed and used over many years, mainly for materials in power cables and power lines. They are also recognized and used for other cables, in particular for optical fiber cables, communication cables, and control cables, including marine cables and cables for offshore applications. This part of the DIN EN 60811 (VDE 0473-811) standard describes the method for determining the mechanical properties that are commonly applicable to cross-linked and thermoplastic compounds used as insulation and sheathing materials. There are no restrictions in accordance with the scope of the document. The standard differs from DIN EN 60811-501 (VDE 0473-811-501):2019-04 as follows: a) 4.2.1, the general requirements for determining the tensile strength and elongation at break of the insulating material of cables and insulated conductors have been revised; b) 4.2.4, the measuring equipment to be used for determining the cross-sectional area of rod samples has been described in more detail; c) 4.3.1, the general requirements for determining the tensile strength and elongation at break of the sheathing material of cables and wires have been revised. Typical examples of application for the document are the methods for determining the mechanical properties that are commonly applicable to cross-linked and thermoplastic compounds used as insulation and sheathing materials.
