Sampling airborne radioactive materials from the stacks and ducts of nuclear facilities (ISO 2889:2023)

Title (German)

Probenentnahme von luftgetragenen radioaktiven Stoffen aus Kanälen und Kaminen kerntechnischer Anlagen (ISO 2889:2023)

Overview

The European Standards on monitoring of gaseous effluents on radioactive contaminations refer to ISO 2889 with respect to sampling. For this reason it is adopted as DIN ISO 2889 into the German body of standards to replace the previous national standards of the DIN 25423 series. Its application in Germany is supported by numerous national footnotes. The recommendations of this standard are aimed at sampling that is conducted for regulatory compliance and system control. If existing air-sampling systems are not designed to the performance requirements and recommendations of this standard, an evaluation of the performance of the system is advised. This new edition of the standard incorporates experience gained from the application of the ISO publication issued in 2010 and additional suggestions. The standard differs from DIN ISO 2889:2012-07 as follows: a) the structure has been revised; b) the terms 3.69 (now 3.66) "sampling point" and 3.73 (now 3.70) "sampling environment" have been supplemented with notes; c) 7.1.3 (now 7.2.4 "leak tests") has been expanded; d) clarification of the boundary conditions under which numerical modeling may be used to demonstrate or support the suitability of sampling points; e) clarification of text passages that allow the use of alternative aerosol particle sizes for testing purposes in order to meet various performance criteria described in this document; f) in Annex B "Models of aerosol particle deposition losses in transport equipment", a reference to the DEPOSITION CALCULATOR program has been added; g) B.1.2 (now B.2.3 "Straight pipes") and B.1.3 (now B.2.4 "Elbows") have been supplemented; h) Table B.1 (now "Example of the use of a program (DEPOSITION CALCULATOR) to estimate the transfer efficiency in a transport device") has been revised; i) changes in the discussion of standard uncertainty with regard to the determination of intervention thresholds (Annex I); j) Clause M.2 "Design of sampling probes" has been supplemented; k) The bibliography has been supplemented.
