Overview

When designing an electrical product, the risk of fire and the potential hazards associated with fires shall be taken into account and minimized as far as possible through the dimensioning of components, the design of the circuit and the choice of materials. The fundamental aim is to prevent ignition wherever possible, and where ignition does occur, to limit the spread of fire. Part 1-30 of the IEC 60695 series provides guidance on the assessment and selection of possible materials, components or sub-assemblies for use in end products, based on a pre-selection test. The standard describes the conditions under which preselection enables comparable fire hazard testing procedures and how it can be used to select materials, parts, components and subassemblies during the development of an end product. The revised edition presented here updates requirements with regard to their new status as a basic safety standard. It also updates references to other parts of the series of standards and definitions of terms. The (informative) example of how to use the pre-selection procedure is now based on requirements for household and similar electrical appliances. This basic safety standard is intended for use by technical committees when preparing standards in accordance with the principles set out in IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51. The application-specific integration of this basic safety standard is the responsibility of the respective technical committee. The responsible committee is DKE/K 133 "Prüfverfahren und Beurteilung der Brandgefahr von elektronischen Produkten und Isolierstoffen" ("Fire hazard testing of electronic products and insulating material") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
