Protective gloves for motorcycle riders - Requirements and test methods; German version EN 13594:2015

Title (German)

Schutzhandschuhe für Motorradfahrer - Anforderungen und Prüfverfahren; Deutsche Fassung EN 13594:2015

Overview

This European Standard applies to protective gloves for motorcycle riders in road traffic. It specifies the requirements for the sizing, ergonomic characteristics, innocuousness, mechanical properties, impact protection as well as labeling and user information. It also describes appropriate test methods. Protective gloves for motorcycle riders are intended to protect against environmental conditions without unnecessarily restricting the wearer's dexterity required to operate motorcycle controls and switches. In addition, the gloves are designed to provide mechanical protection to the wearer's hands and wrists in the event of an accident. The particular hazards that are common in motorcycle accidents are collisions with the motorcycle and other vehicles involved in the accident, or with the road equipment and/or pavement. A motorcycle rider's choice of gloves depends on a number of factors, including motorcycle discipline, weather conditions, the frequency with which the gloves are put on and taken off, and the length of time the gloves are typically worn. Two performance classes for protective gloves have been established to support the adoption of certified protection for the greatest number of users possible. These are Protection Class 1 for gloves designed to protect but with little ergonomic impact associated with their use, and Protection Class 2 for gloves that provide greater protection than Protection Class 1. However, there may be weight implications and movement restrictions associated with Protection Class 2. The standard has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 162 "Protective clothing including hand and arm protection and lifejackets", the secretariat of which is held by DIN (Germany). The responsible German committee is Working Committee NA 075-05-09 AA "Motorradfahrerschutzkleidung" ("Motorcycle rider protective clothing") at DIN Standards Committee Personal Protective Equipment (NPS).
