DIN 19703
Locks for waterways for inland navigation - Principles for dimensioning and equipment

Title (German)

Schleusen der Binnenschifffahrtsstraßen - Grundsätze für Abmessungen und Ausrüstung

Overview

The standard specifies requirements for dimensioning, equipment, construction and overall arrangement of massive locks for waterway for inland navigation to be newly erected. The standard shall be analogously applied for the improvement of the functionality of existing locks within the maintenance as well for sheet pile locks and with regard to equipment, for approach piers for entrance, outer harbours and moorings with vertical embankments. Following a clarification of certain terminology, statements for regular dimensions of locks are made which are in particular due to operations with larger vessels. Specifications for construction and overall arrangement, equipment (marking of the effective length and entry aids), ladders, bollards (impacts, arrangement, recessed, edge, floating bollards), mooring devices for maintenance and sports and leisure shipping, edge and collision protection (skirting boards, shock protection devices), guardrails, equipment in the head areas, safety and rescue devices, represent the most important part of the standard. The revision of the standard DIN 19703:1995-11 is justified, amongst others, that various aspects in inland navigation have been identified in the past that shall now be taken into account in the new version of the standard: modifications in lock operation that occurred in the meantime (for example remote operation) and in shipping itself (for example, small crews on larger vessels). The revision contributed to create further opportunities for reduction of risks of accidents or their consequences. The standard has been prepared by Working Committee NA 119-02-03 AA "Verkehrswasserbau" ("Constructions for inland navigation") at the Water Practice Standards Committee (NAW).
