Overview

This standard specifies a method for the determination of non-volatile matter immediately after application or after intermediate or final drying. The determination of non-volatile matter is primarily implemented in practice when water-dilatable coatings are used upon which another varnish is applied. When applying coatings, the size or size distribution of the varnish droplets produced is of major importance for the coating result. The quality of the coating result can be controlled by varying the application parameters, such as atomisation energy, rate of flow of lacquer and the coating-related characteristics, such as the composition of the solvent and rheological behaviour. The climate conditions during application (for example, temperature, relative humidity, downdraft speed) also have a great influence on the result. By determination of non-volatile matter after application or after intermediate and final drying, the characterization of the wet or dry coating result and, therewith, an indirect conclusion on the produced droplet size distribution and the associated solvent emission during application is possible. From the non-volatile matter calculated therefrom, the sufficient intermediate drying of the present coating prior to application of a further coating is determined. Furthermore, the method is suitable for comparison of the efficiency of various application and drying methods.
