Overview

Members of Technical Committees for helmet standards frequently need to define limits for test procedures. Such limits relate to test values that indicate the potential for injury - yet it is often difficult to understand the type and severity of injury that is represented by a given test value. This DIN SPEC, which has been prepared according to the procedural rules of a Technical Report, is directed at working groups of technical committees which prepare standards in the field of head protection. This document has been prepared in order to provide information to members of standardization committees which help to select test limit values in regards to certain types of injury and a certain severity level of injury. It is to be noted that accident experts use a grading system, which is known as the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) (grading of accident injuries into 6 severity levels). This document contains the AIS scale and its application for head and neck injuries as well as burns. Each type of measurement is considered and, if necessary, the severity level of injury is determined at certain values. A clause about burns and exhaustion due to the influence of heat is included, which should be helpful for standards for fire service protection equipment. The skin structure as well as the categories and consequences of burns are described in the annex. Premature deafness as a result of noise and the problem associated with excessive damping of acoustic warning signals have also been considered. In Annex A, recommended levels with details about test methods have been recorded.
