DIN 18137-1
Soil, investigation and testing - Determination of shear strenght - Part 1: Concepts and general testing conditions

Title (German)

Baugrund, Untersuchung von Bodenproben - Bestimmung der Scherfestigkeit - Teil 1: Begriffe und grundsätzliche Versuchsbedingungen

Overview

The knowledge of shear strength is necessary for geostatic calculations in both earthworks and foundation engineering. This standard defines parameters for the labelling of shear strength, as well as the appropriate test conditions for their determination. Purely mechanical stresses are assumed. The standard also applies to artificially fixed soils, as long as the viscose (speed dependent) properties in regards to the plastic (non-speed related) properties are negligible. The parameters which refer to viscous properties of soil are not covered by this standard. The terminology used in this standard is related to the testing of samples. For precise interpretation of the tests it is assumed that the samples are homogeneous. This standard has been prepared by Working Committee NA 005-05-03 AA "Baugrund; Laborversuche" ("Soil, laboratory tests") at the German Civil Engineering Standards Committee (NABau) of DIN, the German Institute for Standardization e. V.
