Peelable packagings – packages which are sealed by a seam and easy to open by hand – have a wide range of uses in the field of consumer packages, e. g. cosmetics, dairy products, meat products, cereals, coffee products, pet food and detergents and cleaners. Another field of use is medicine products for sterile area, where easy opening is necessary to avoid contamination.

The determination of opening forces for already produced packagings is described in:

  • DIN 55409:2012, Packaging - Test method for determining opening forces for peelable packagings - Part 1: Flexible packagings
  • DIN 55409:2013, Packaging - Test method for determining opening forces for peelable packagings - Part 2: Dimensionally stable packagings

The determination of opening forces within the development and design process of packages was subject of research activities from Fraunhofer IVV Dresden (IGF-Vorhaben 18613 BR „Easy-ReliablePeel“).

The research results will be used within the project PeelStrength to develop a standardized test method and to transfer it into standardization, e. g. as DIN SPEC.
