SEAMPHONI

Strengthening Ecosystem-based Assessment and Monitoring for Protected Habitats in Offshore areas and Newly Identified MPAs

Bild

The European research project SEAMPHONI is dedicated to bringing visibility to the vast and largely unprotected offshore marine areas and aims to improve the assessment and monitoring of these areas to improve their protection.

SEAMPHONI promotes the testing, coupling, and validation of three innovative monitoring solutions: environmental DNA (eDNA), acoustics, and imaging. Together, these technologies will create a common monitoring system for scientists, decision-makers, public administrations and citizens. By mapping Europe's seas and biodiversity more comprehensively, accurately and quickly, SEAMPHONI will help to identify and prioritise protected areas, provide an evidence-based assessment of the state of marine ecosystems and the impact of protection and restoration measures, and thus promote holistic and sustainable models for the protection of these areas.

SEAMPHONI will also examine the complexity of the legal framework for marine protection and the fragmentation of rights within these areas, highlighting the need for clearer frameworks and improved coordination to support the designation and protection of Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas (PSSAs). Moreover, the project contributes to achieving the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) targets by 2030.

SEAMPHONI embraces an artistic strategy to enhance public awareness and connection with marine areas. Through the integration of science and art, the project aims to sensitize society to the importance and protection of maritime ecosystems.

Objectives:

  1. Introduction of dynamic maps and digital tools for faster, more comprehensive, and cost-effective monitoring.
  2. Enforcement of strict protection and achievement of sustainability goals through improved and harmonized management and the development of interoperable and adaptable digital tools that will enhance knowledge, decision-making processes, and scenarios to mitigate anthropogenic influences.
  3. Establishment of a trans-European blue network by connecting stakeholders, ecosystems, and disciplines.

DIN is responsible for the standardization activities within the project. This includes the compilation of an overview of published standards relevant for the project, development of a standardization strategy for SEAMPHONI including the analysis of standardization gaps, the identification of needs for new or revised standards and the transfer of project results through participation in European or international standardization activities and, where appropriate, the drafting of CEN Workshop Agreements (CWA) with the project partners and any interested experts.
