Soil quality - Instructions for mapping erosion and accumulation forms caused by wind

Title (German)

Bodenbeschaffenheit - Anleitung zur Kartierung von Erosions- und Akkumulationsformen durch Wind

Overview

This document specifies the procedure for cartographic mapping and documentation of current forms of wind erosion and accumulation. The data collected during mapping also supports an analysis of the causes of soil erosion systems and thus contributes to the creation of local protective measures. This document provides guidelines toward preparation of an updatable digital catalog of wind-induced erosion events and for long-term monitoring. It offers a comprehensive set of tools for mapping wind-induced soil erosion phenomena. Methods for overview and detailed mapping are presented as a function of the level of detail required. It may be necessary to include additional mapping elements in individual cases. This document does not make it possible to determine whether or not the forms of erosion and accumulation described are significant and thus constitute harmful soil changes within the meaning of soil conservation legislation. The recording of concrete, current forms of wind erosion through territory mapping and corresponding forms of accumulation shall be distinguished from the assessment of wind erosion risk (DIN 19706 Soil quality - Determination of the soil erosion risk caused by wind). The responsible national standardization committee is Working Committee NA 119-08-03 AA "Standortbeurteilung, Bodenschutz, Altlastensanierung" ("Site assessment, waste disposal, site rehabilitation") at DIN Standards Committee Water Practice (NAW).
