DIN Standards Committee Water Practice

Overview

This standard defines a batch test to determine the leachability of organic substances from solid substances at a liquid to solid ratio of 2 l/kg of dry matter for a compliance test. The procedure is not suitable for volatile or easily biodegradable substances. The object of this test is to determine the release behaviour of solid substances. The complexity of this process necessitates simplification. Generally, three categories regarding the characterization of release behaviour can be differentiated. 1) The "fundamental characterization" is utilized in order to obtain information about the short- and long-term leaching behaviour of solids. The tests take into account various liquid to solid ratios and cover factors which influence the leaching of substances, for example, pH-value, redox potential, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), or colloids and aging processes. 2) The "compliance test procedures" are utilized in order to determine whether the substance to be analysed corresponds to a specific behaviour or specific reference values. The tests focus on key variables identified previously in tests for fundamental characterization, as well as the leaching behaviour at a particular point in time (or for a particular liquid to solid ratio). 3) An "on-site verification test" provides a quick confirmation if the substance to be analysed is identical to the substance subjected to the aforementioned compliance test procedure. On-site verification tests are not necessarily leaching tests. The procedure described in this standard belongs to category 2 "compliance test procedures".
