Welding of ETFE films for construction applications, Part 5: Mechanical properties of welded ETFE films
Abstract
This document specifies qualitative and quantitative test methods for determining the quality of ETFE surface and edge welds. The qualitative test methods include a manual tensile test and a manual peel test as well as a manual peel test with aids. Part 5 of the DIN 18229 series of standards also defines visual inspections for use before, during and after welding. The quantitative test methods include a short-term tensile test and a short-term peel test, which provide specific values for the weld strength. These test methods form the basis for the procedures defined in parts 1 to 4 of this DIN standard series for the qualification of the welding process and welding personnel in the field of ETFE constructions. The definition of these test methods is necessary because test methods already defined in existing standards (e.g. short-term tensile test according to DIN EN ISO 527-1 and -3) are not applicable to ETFE weld seams, as these are component samples and not material samples with a homogeneous cross-section and material behavior.
