Driers for paints and varnishes - Methods for determination of metal contents of mixed driers

Title (German)

Trockenstoffe für Beschichtungsstoffe - Bestimmung des Metallgehaltes von Mehrmetall-Trockenstoffen

Overview

In addition to DIN EN ISO 4619, this document specifies test methods for determining the metal content of metal contents of mixed driers. This document is applicable to all naphthenates, octoates, and similarly structured metal soaps (metal salts of organic acids). It is applicable to metal contents of mixed driers with the following metal combinations: cobalt-barium-zinc, cobalt-barium-zirconium, cobalt-zirconium, cobalt-manganese. The analysis methods shall be agreed upon for metal contents of mixed driers with other metal combinations. Other methods that allow the quantitative determination of metal contents, for example atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS method), are permissible. However, it should be noted that deviations from the true metal content may occur depending on the degree of dilution during the preparation of the samples to be analyzed. It is possible to determine the metal content after appropriate acid digestion using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Information on measurement conditions (wavelengths, interference) is contained in DIN EN ISO 11885:2009-09, Clause 5. Comparability with the results obtained in accordance with this document has not yet been verified. This document has been prepared by Working Committee NA 002-00-02 AA "Lackrohstoffe" ("Raw materials for paints and varnishes") at DIN Standards Committee Coatings and Coating Materials (NAB).
