Nuclear power plants - Instrumentation and control systems - Requirements for coordinating safety and cybersecurity (IEC 62859:2016)
Kernkraftwerke - Leittechnische Systeme - Anforderungen für die Koordinierung von Sicherheit und IT-Sicherheit (IEC 62859:2016)
Overview
Over the last few decades control technology systems have developed from non-digital and independently operating devices to digital technologies and interconnected systems. Such a development exposes them to risks from cyberattacks. In addition to established safety-related precautions, the same systems are now subject to more recent IT security requirements and measures. A framework is needed to address the interdependencies and side effects when nuclear and cyber security measures come together on the same control systems and architectures, taking into account the special features of the control technology used in nuclear technology. The standard is specifically aimed at establishing requirements for the coordination of nuclear safety and IT security provisions for programmable digital systems and architectures. It defines both general principles and practical guidelines for technical, conceptual and procedural aspects of the integration of IT security requirements into nuclear control and instrumentation architectures and systems based on a safety design. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 967.1 "Leittechnik für kerntechnische Anlagen" ("Instrumentation and control of nuclear facilities") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
