Protection of telecommunication lines against direct lightning flashes

Abstract

This draft standard contains the German version of the Recommendation K.47:2012-05 of the Internationalen Telecommunication Union ITU-T. It describes a procedure for the evaluation of the protection of telecommunication lines with metallic symmetric components against direct lightning flashes to the line itself or to the structures that the line enters. Hereby symmetric cables, coaxial cables and optical fibre cables are considered. Furthermore buried and aerial lines are taken into account. The described calculation procedure allows the assessment of the expected annual number of damages and the risk of damage due to direct lightning flashes. The calculated risk can be used in order to evaluate the need of implementing additional protection measures on the line. This draft intends to replace DIN EN 61663-1 (VDE 0845-4-1):2000-07. EN 61663-1 was withdrawn as result of the re-structuring of the International and European standards in the field of the lightning and overvoltage protection of telecommunikation lines. The subject was deleted from the scope of IEC/TC 81 or CLC/TC 81X, respectively, according to this re-structuring while it was taken over by ITU-T.
