Overview
This guideline describes the principles and procedures for calculating the pressure rise in switchgear assemblies with rated voltages greater than 1 kV AC and their installation rooms in case of an arc fault. The principles and procedures for pressure calculation: - in electrical installations and; - in their installation rooms are described. This guide applies to: - air- and gas-insulated switchgear (this guide focuses on the insulating gases air and SF6); - open and enclosed switchgear; - rooms in which these installations are located or which are connected to them; - other rooms in which arc faults may occur; - devices for pressure relief, venting, or pressure limitation. This guide does not apply - as a substitute for arc fault tests described in equipment standards. The implementation, scope, and evaluation of such tests can be found, for example, in the standards DIN EN 62271-200 "AC metal-enclosed switchgear and controlgear for rated voltages above 1 kV and up to and including 52 kV", DIN EN 62271-202 "AC prefabricated substations for rated voltages above 1 kV and up to and including 52 kV" - for rooms with explosive gas mixtures, liquids, and dust; - the secondary effects that occur in this context are not taken into account; - for assessing the risk to persons, for example due to escaping hot gases, toxic decomposition products. In accordance with the specifications of DIN EN 61936-1, the mechanical load on the building structure and the internal pressure caused by an arc fault shall be taken into account when designing and constructing switchgear rooms. Pressure calculations for the installation rooms of electrical systems and associated additional relief rooms are suitable for such an assessment. Arc faults can occur in high-voltage switchgear, transformer connections, or other enclosed or open electrical equipment, among other places. The basic determination of the requirement for pressure calculations is not covered by this guide.
