Soil - Calculation of design bearing capacity of soil beneath shallow foundations
Abstract
This document is applicable for the calculation of the ground failure resistance of shallow foundations on the basis of the layer patterns and the characteristic values of the soil parameters in accordance with DIN 4020. It deals with the calculation principles and calculation methods for determining the ground failure resistance in the base area of shallow foundations. The calculation methods are based on the assumption of approximately direction-independent shear parameters for each layer under consideration. This document is applicable for strip footings and for stocky footings if they can be assumed to be rigid. This document is applicable for perpendicular or inclined and centrally or eccentrically loaded shallow foundations in soil with embedment depth d and foundation width b in the range d/b ≤ 2 a) with a horizontal ground surface; b) with an inclined ground surface, provided that the long side of the foundation runs approximately parallel to the contour lines of the ground and the horizontal component of the resultant of the actions is directed approximately parallel to the short side of the foundation. For d/b > 2, the results are on the safe side, provided that d/b = 2 is used in the calculation. The calculation of the ground failure resistance applies - for non-cohesive soils whose relative bearing density ID > 0.2 (for a non-uniformity number CU ≤ 3) or ID > 0.35 (for a non-uniformity number CU > 3), - for cohesive soils with a consistency index IC > 0.5. This document is not suitable for verifying suitability for use.
