Testing of lubricants - Tribological test in the translatory oscillation apparatus - Part 6: Quantification of the friction-induced wear development of brake fluids in EPDM-metal contacts

Abstract

The document specifies a method for determining the tendency of brake fluids to generate wear in sealing contacts of EPDM with metal during translational oscillating relative motions. This is achieved by dry "PDR" preconditioning of the EPDM surface by using an indexable insert installed in the tribometer before the test run. The EPDM disc, which is rotated by 90° relative to the direction of motion during conditioning, is then tribologically stressed with a steel test ball and a precisely measured quantity of the test fluid to be evaluated (d) at 105°C at the identical operating point with 6,000 start-stop cycles. Each cycle has a duration of 5 s composed of 4 s on (in defined working point, s= 3 mm, F = 100 N and f = 40 Hz) and 1 s off (Stop).
