Under forest conditions biodegradable tree shelters made of renewables - Requirements and test methods

Abstract

This DIN SPEC in accordance with the PAS procedure has been drawn up by a DIN-SPEC-consortium set up on a temporary basis. This DIN SPEC has been developed and approved by the authors named in the foreword. This document specifies requirements and test methods for growing media made from renewable raw materials that are biodegradable under forest conditions. Growth covers according to this document consist verifiably and completely of biomaterials (e.g. wood, biopolymers, natural fibers, natural resins or waxes), all of which are completely biodegradable in the forest in an environmentally compatible manner, as well as of inorganic minerals naturally present in the soil (e.g. silicate flours, rock flours) and other natural organic and inorganic substances. In addition, metallic by-products for fastening are also possible (e.g. galvanized staple needles/wire). According to current knowledge (estimation of the potential input quantity and in comparison with limit values [according to DIN EN 17033]), the impact of the input of regulated metals through the fastening material of growth covers can be neglected. Growth covers made exclusively from untreated and mechanically processed wood are excluded from the test procedure.
