Personal protective equipment for fire fighters - mirror committee of CEN/TC 158/WG 3

Scope of work

The working committee deals with the standardisation of firefighters' helmets and body-carried equipment. Overview of the main standardisation topics of the committee so far:

  • Firefighters' helmets for firefighting in buildings and other structures DIN EN 443, for forest firefighting DIN EN 16471 and for technical rescue DIN EN 16473;
  • Fire brigade harness DIN 14927 with snap hook DIN 5290-2 and fire brigade hatchet DIN 14924 or fire brigade multi-purpose tool;
  • Fire brigade multi-purpose bag DIN 14922 with fire brigade rope DIN 14920.
The standardisation of protective clothing including foot and hand protection as well as the standardisation of respiratory protection does not belong to the field of work of NA 031-04-03 AA. This is done to avoid duplication of structures in the DIN Standards Committee on Personal Protective Equipment (NPS) or Precision Mechanics and Optics (NAFuO). NA 031-04-03 AA sends experts to the technical committees of the NPS or NAFuO (in the latter case concerning respiratory protection).

The most important aim of the standardisation work is to ensure that fire-fighting operations can be carried out safely, taking into account a long period of use, by means of technical safety specifications designed for wearing comfort.
