Overview

This Technical Report presents the results of a European study on "Children's mouthing behavior in contact with toys". The study was the one with the largest sample size to date (245 children and a total of 1 680 observations) and the only one conducted in three different European countries (Germany, France and Spain). It was also the study with the strongest representation of specific toys (54 different products) for children aged up to 36 months. The Technical Report provides statistical data on the duration and frequency with which children under 36 months of age insert toys into their mouths, as well as estimated data on the amount of time children less than 36 months of age spend in daily oral contact with toys. Furthermore, it provides information on: - the literature focused on children's mouthing behaviour, including commonly used methodologies and significant results; - the design and methodology of the study; - the data on the children and toy sample; - the forms used in data collection. The Technical Report has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 52 "Safety of toys", the secretariat of which is held by DS (Denmark). The responsible German/national standardization committee is Working Committee NA 095-05-01-02 AK "Sicherheit von Spielzeug - Chemische Eigenschaften" ("Safety of toys - Chemical properties") at DIN Standards Committee Safety Design Principles (NASG).
