Components for low-voltage surge protective devices - Part 311: Performance requirements and test circuits for gas discharge tubes (GDT) (IEC 61643-311:2013); German version EN 61643-311:2013
Bauelemente für Überspannungsschutzgeräte für Niederspannung - Teil 311: Leistungsanforderungen sowie Prüfschaltungen und -verfahren für Gasentladungsableiter (ÜsAG) (IEC 61643-311:2013); Deutsche Fassung EN 61643-311:2013
Overview
This standard contains the German version of European Standard EN 61643-311:2013 taking over International Standard IEC 61643-311. It contains performance requirements for gas discharge tubes (surge arresters, gas-filled, GDT) having two or three electrodes; such devices are used for the protection of applications up to 1 000 V ac or 1 500 V dc in communication or signalling circuits and consist of a gap or series of gaps in a hermetically enclosed discharge medium other than air. The provisions concern the service conditions and the mechanical and radiation requirements and electrical requirements for the aforementioned protective devices and marking of devices. The mechanical and radiation requirements concern the robustness of terminations, the solderability of the components and they indicate that components shall not emit radioactive radiation. The electrical requirements concern the insulation resistance, capacitance, glow-to-arc transition current, glow voltage, arc voltage, transverse voltage, DC holdover voltage and current-carrying capacity. The initial values and values to be met after the application of load for the individual parameters are specified. The test circuits and methods required for determining the electrical characteristics of the stated components are also described in this standard. The aforementioned parameters the compliance of which is specified shall be measured. Finally, specifications on marking are established. Compared to the previous edition of the standard, additions to the terms have been made, the radiation specifications have been changed so that gas discharge tubes shall not emit radioactive radiation, and various performance parameters have been amended or supplemented. Furthermore, the test circuits for dc holdover voltage, three-electrode GDTs and the circuit for nominal impulse discharge current, three-electrode GDTs have been changed. Finally, testing of the alternating follow current has been included. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 767.6 "Schutz von Einrichtungen der Informationstechnik gegen Überspannungen und niederfrequente Felder" ("Protection of information technology equipment against overvoltage and low-frequency fields") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
