Soil, treated biowaste, sludge, and sediment - Determination of mercury - Direct solid analysis by thermal decomposition, amalgamation and atomic absorption spectrometric determination

Abstract

The direct analysis of solids by thermal decomposition, amalgamation and atomic absorption spectrometry for the analysis of mercury in solids has been used in analytical laboratories for many years. It is standardized in the food sector (DIN EN 13806-3). The method can also be used in the field of environmental analysis, but there is no standard (neither DIN, EN nor ISO) for this; at international level there is EPA-7473 and also ASTM-67D6722-19 for the application area of coal. With the development of the DIN 3612 standard, this standardization gap is to be closed so that this process can also be used in the environmental area/solids. Compared to the already standardized methods using cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry or cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry, this method is characterized by the fact that no digestion of the solid has to be prepared, but the solid can be measured directly. It is very powerful and precise.
