Overview

This document has been prepared by Working Committees NA 062-06-62 AA "Prüfung von Schmierfetten" ("Testing of lubricating greases") at Technical Section Standardization of Petroleum, Fuels, Lubricants and Related Products (FAM) of the Materials Testing Standards Committee (NMP) at DIN. This document is technically equivalent with the method IP 121:2011 "Determination of oil separation from lubricating grease - Pressure filtration method" of the Institute of Petroleum (IP), but differs from the following from IP 121:2011: a) the test duration of the DIN short time test is 18 h (IP: 42 h). This short time test is regarded an appropriate quick check for production control in the manufacturing company. In particular application cases, a numerical relation between normal test and short time test can be established; b) this document allows test temperatures between 40 °C and 120 °C (IP: 40 °C); c) the precision values given in this document deviate from those IP values. This document applies for any type of grease, except greases that are so flowable that they flow unaffected through the woven wire cloth of the test apparatus during the test duration. The method in accordance with this document serves for the determination of the oil separation from greases.
