Overview

DIN SPEC 4683 is directed at institutions who erect or operate cryostats for cryogenically liquefied helium. Cryostats for liquefied helium are typically operated in scientific research facilities. One important application case is the operation of helium-cooled superconducting magnets. Generally accepted standards or design principles do not exist for these special applications which is why such installations are custom-made for the individual application case. This DIN SPEC is intended to provide guidance for the hazard analysis (manufacturer's task) and risk assessment (task of the installation operator = employer within the meaning of BetrSichV), for pressure build-up, for the safeguarding concept and for damage limitation of stationary pressure equipment for cryogenic helium in all thermodynamic states. The focus is particularly on installations with permitted operating pressures exceeding 0,5 bar since these are within the scope of the European Pressure Equipment Directive. This document may, however, also be helpful for pressure equipment with a permitted operating pressure of up to 0,5 bar. This document supports the coordination and communication of the bodies involved, such as, for example, manufacturers, Notified Bodies, approved inspection bodies or operators. This document serves as a guideline for the determination of the respective risk situation of individual helium cryostats and for the preparation of individual safeguarding concepts. In addition to that, guidance is given for the operation of the installations. The committee responsible for this document is NA 016-00-07 AA "Flüssighelium-Druckbehälter - Sicherheitseinrichtungen gegen Drucküberschreitungen" ("Pressure vessels for liquefied helium - Safety devices against excessive pressure") at DIN.
