DIN and international standardization

40. ISO General Assembly

The ISO General Assembly took place in Berlin on 20 and 21 September 2017 with guests from around 134 nations under the motto “Open-minded. Open for change”.

As host of the event DIN devoted the “ISO week in Germany” to the future of standardization. The ISO Community discussed new customer requirements emerging as a result of innovative technologies and the digital transformation, to exchange best practices and to work out solution scenarios together. The participants were welcomed by the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Brigitte Zypries. Panel discussions were held to examine the question of cooperation with other organizations that develop standards, and also with fora and consortia. In break-out sessions  topics such as energy and the environment, innovation in standards development, ISO’s regional engagement and ways to attract the younger generation to standardization were on the agenda.

DIN devoted the open session on 22 September 2017 exclusively to discussing the future viabilty of standardization and the four core topics on which this depends: the early identification of new subjects for standardization, the acquisition of young experts, working procedures in the “TC of the future” and cooperation with fora and consortia. Interactive sessions took place where these subjects were covered in-depth and an action plan was created. In the afternoon, the programme featured visits to innovation companies and start-ups, focusing on the automotive sector, smart data and medical technology.
