DIN takes part in Environment Week

German President Joachim Gauck, together with the environmental foundation Bundesstiftung Umwelt, hosted the fourth "Environment Week" in Berlin on 5 and 6 June 2012. DIN was also represented at the event, where in a panel discussion the institute explained how standards encourage sustainable economic management. At the event, held in the grounds of Bellevue Palace, tribute was also paid to retired high-ranking government official Ministerialrat a. D. Dr.-Ing. h.c. Dietrich Ruchay for his many years of commitment to environmental standardization, followed by a ceremony in which he was admitted to the Waldemar-Hellmich-Kreis, the honorary Senate of DIN.

(2012-06-06) The projects presented in the grounds of Bellevue Palace had been selected to give an overview of the range and variety of activities in environmental technology, research, education and protection, and to demonstrate that this is an important issue for the future that is of great significance for Germany.

A forum organized by DIN was held on 5 June at which representatives from industry and society, and also environmental policy experts, discussed the ways in which standards can contribute to sustainable economic development. Special focus was placed on the standard DIN ISO 26000 on the social responsibility of organizations, the environmental management standard DIN EN ISO 14001, and DIN EN ISO 50001 on energy management systems. The discussion was followed by a ceremony in honour of Dr. Ruchay.

During "Environment Week" around 200 companies, institutions, research establishments, associations and initiatives presented new technologies, products and projects that promote the efficient and sustainable treatment of resources. Besides around 200 exhibition stands and six major discussion sessions on the main stage, almost 80 one-hour-long forum discussions also provided a wealth of information on the environment, climate protection and nature conservation. Twelve thousand invited guests from politics, business, academia, societal interest organizations and the media took part in Environment Week.
