Brussels office celebrates its first anniversary
Dialogue with policy makers
(2012-06-27) It is about a year since DIN first opened its own representational office in Brussels. At a summer reception on 25 June, DIN Director Dr. Torsten Bahke looked back on two years of dialogue with policy makers on the subject of the Regulation on European Standardization, stating "The fact that, by working together, we have succeeded in boosting the principle of delegation and retaining the concept of private sector involvement in the standardization system is a landmark achievement that demonstrates that standardization is fit for the future. We are pleased that the European Parliament, Council and Commission have been guided by the same common goal that is one hundred percent in keeping with that of the standards organizations, namely to improve the competitiveness of companies by simplifying the free exchange of goods and services and facilitating technological development and innovation."
In his opening address, Ambassador Dr. Guido Peruzzo thanked DIN for the intensive information campaign it has carried out in matters regarding standardization. According to Dr. Peruzzo, this has played an essential role in shaping the content of the regulation. He was satisfied with the outcome of the negotiations on the standards package, saying that a compromise had been found that complements well-functioning member structures without weakening them. He endorsed DIN's commitment to continue to represent the interests of German industry in Brussels.
Dr. Andreas Schwab, MdEP, and Group Spokesman on Internal Market policy of the European Peoples' Party Group (EPP) in the European Parliament, affirmed: "With this regulation we have paved the way for a more effective European standardization system. This we have done by reducing financial and bureaucratic hurdles, improving SMEs' access to standards, and encouraging market-oriented standardization. This is an important step towards making the European economy even more competitive."
